Chess Pieces

Chess pieces clearly play a very big part in chess. but what to they do? Those pieces are worth points?

King - Moves one square in any direction.

Queen - Moves as many squares as it wants horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

Rook - Moves as many square as it wants horizontally or vertically.

Bishop - Moves as many squares as it wants diagonally.

Knight - Moves in an “L” shape. Two squares in any direction vertically then one square horizontally, or two squares in any direction horizontally then one square vertically. This is also the only piece that can “jump” over pieces.

Pawn - On the first move it can move one or two moves forward but after that it can only move one move forward unless capturing which it does by moving one move diagonally forward.

THE KING:

The king is not a powerful piece and has no points because once a king is checkmated the game is over.

The king cannot move into a check or stay in a check.

THE QUEEN:

The queen is said the be the most powerful piece on the board and sits on its own color nicely beside the king.

The queen is worth 9 points if captured.

THE ROOK:

The rook is the second most powerful after the queen because unlike the bishop it can control entire file and ranks by itself.

The rook is worth 5 points if captured

THE BISHOP:

The bishop can occupy long diagonals and are good strategic pieces when lots of pieces are out.

If the bishop in captured it is worth 3 points

THE KNIGHT:

The knight is a sneaky piece and can jump over pieces.

Forks are mostly made with this piece because of its un-natural “L” movements.

If captured, it is worth 3 points as well and does nicely with less pieces on the board

THE PAWN:

Although this is the well known pawn many underrate the strength and importance of this piece, many overlook this piece when calculating which makes it the perfect weapon.

The pawn always attacks two squares but causes destruction when defended or in groups.

When captured, the pawn is worth 1 point.

When the pawn promotes (gets to the last rank that the pawn is facing then it can become a queen, rook, bishop or knight.)
